The Department of Language Arts provides continuous instruction for the students in the many facets of language arts throughout the four years of high school. This instruction emphasizes the following skills:
- developing, maintaining, and exhibiting a positive attitude towards language
- using various strategies for improving reading skills such as semantic, syntactic, and phonetic cues
- improving reading comprehension
- exploring and using the various strategies for the writing process -- prewriting, drafting, peer sharing, revising, and editing
- providing the opportunity to write for different purposes such as narrative, descriptive, expository, and persuasion
- participating in critical reading and writing sessions by analyzing pieces of writing and literature
- learning to communicate orally in a clear, effective manner; and applying these skills to literature, language, and culture.
